Correcting Pulse-Front Errors in the OMEGA EP Pulse Compressor
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the Omega EP laser, the pulse must be stretched in time, amplified, and subsequently compressed in a grating compressor in order to obtain high peak power. A model was used to characterize the temporally resolved near-field and far-field beam distributions for several different compressor configurations that included grating alignment errors and grating surface figure errors. The spatio-temporal effect of correcting the compressor output wavefront by use of a deformable mirror (DM) is presented and a trade-off between best spatial and temporal performance is elucidated. 2 Mary Brummond

Modeling the Effects of Deformable Mirror Location in the OMEGA EP Pulse Compression System
The wavefront of the OMEGA EP laser beam within the pulse compression system is corrected using a deformable mirror (DM) located after the last grating of the pulse compressor. A spatio-temporal numerical model (EPCOMP) was used to investigate whether the DM could be moved to a location before the first grating of the compressor. This would reduce the peak power incident on the DM by a factor o...

LLE Review, Volume 115 113 Introduction The OMEGA EP chirped-pulse–amplification system at LLE requires two 1.5-m large-aperture grating compressors to achieve high-energy petawatt capability.1 The current state-ofthe-art multilayer dielectric (MLD) diffraction gratings cannot meet this size requirement.2 Several institutes have explored the possibility of tiling gratings.3–6 Kessler and Cotel ...
متن کاملIn situ detection and analysis of laser-induced damage on a 1.5-m multilayer-dielectric grating compressor for high-energy, petawatt-class laser systems.
A grating-inspection system and a damage-analysis method have been developed to measure in situ laser-induced damage on a 1.5-m tiled-grating assembly of the OMEGA EP pulse compressor during a 15-ps, 2.2-kJ energy ramp. The beam fluence at which significant damage growth occurred was determined. This is the first report on beam fluence versus laser-induced-damage growth of meter-sized multilaye...
متن کاملGrated Compressor Modeling
In order to avoid laser-induced damage to optical components during amplification of a short laser pulse, the pulse often is first stretched in time to reduce its peak power, amplified, and then recompressed. High peak irradiance is attained when the laser beam is subsequently focused onto a laser fusion target. In a laser system, currently under construction, large diffraction gratings will be...
متن کاملIntegrated single grating compressor for variable pulse front tilt in simultaneously spatially and temporally focused systems.
A Ti:Al(3)O(2) multipass chirped pulse amplification system is outfitted with a single-grating, simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF) compressor platform. For the first time, this novel design has the ability to easily vary the beam aspect ratio of an SSTF beam, and thus the degree of pulse-front tilt at focus, while maintaining a net zero-dispersion system. Accessible variation of ...
